Dolores Keaveney

Dolores Keaveney

Dolores is a Self Published Author/Illustrator of Children’s Picture Books.

She started writing and illustrating children’s picture books 4 years ago and now has seven books self published.

Dolores is an artist not a qualified illustrator, and likes to paint in strong vibrant colours as she think`s this adds greatly to her books. She love`s painting and finds it is a great way to chill out and to relax and to express herself in her paintings.  Flowers are her favourite item to paint and has made this her painting choice.

Dolores has been painting for the best part of 40 years, and has had many exhibitions.

In 2009 Dolores launched her first picture book If I were a bee.....and decided to self publish it because she had read up and researched a lot about self publishing over the previous year and felt it was a route she`d would like to take as it was a challenging way to go about publishing a book.   She realised from the start that it would be a daunting journey but felt she still wanted to go this route.    This book was a great success and spurred her on to write and illustrate more.  Dolores has continued to launch one or two books per year since then.

Books are suited from around 3-8years, Earth Angels are Everywhere is for older children/young adults

Marco Moves in

A grizzly bear walked all the way from the zoo to my front door and not a single person noticed him. I suppose it helped that it was night, and that he was wearing a big black duffle coat with an enormous hood that covered his hairy head. He knocked on the front door three times, loud knocks that shook the house. Patrick makes his unexpected guest at home, while keeping him hidden from the neighbours, police and his very distractable mum! An intriguing, engaging and rather remarkable tale.

Marco Moonwalker

After escaping from the zoo and coming to live with Patrick and his mum, Marco proves to have many talents. Now Patrick discovers that Marco is also a musical genius he can play the trombone, banjo and even moonwalk like Michael Jackson! Let’s start a band Patrick says, and Marco becomes a star. Then disaster strikes. He is spotted without his mask and taken back to the zoo. How will Patrick and Mum get him out again?

Marco, Master of Disguise

Nearly everyone in my class had a pet of some sort. Lots of them had dogs, and a fair few had cats, budgies and goldfish. Max Wallace had a hamster and Adam O’Hara had a tortoise which he claimed was sixty years old, though I’m pretty sure he was exaggerating. Sam Tripp had a small lizard and a pet rabbit, which was a strange combination. But no one I knew had a grizzly bear sleeping in their garden shed, or sat beside a grizzly bear most nights watching TV. Marco wasn’t a pet, of course. He was my friend. My best friend. Can Patrick stop his friend being sent back to the zoo? An absurd and hilarious tale of real friendship.

Ladybird Books

Lady Bird Books

Ladybird Books

As a parent, supporting and encouraging your child’s reading development is hugely rewarding for both of you and one way to do this is to read together at home. This is where the Read it yourself with Ladybird series can help as choosing books from a series with a levelling system will help you find books that match your child’s reading skill and encourage further reading.

Ladybird Books is a London based publishing company, publishing childrens books, trading as a stand-alone imprint within the Penguin Group of companies. Around 1915, was when they published their first children's books, under the Ladybird imprint. From the start, the company was identified by a ladybird logo, at first with open wings, but eventually changed to the more familiar closed-wing ladybird in the late 1950s. The ladybird logo has since undergone several redesigns, the latest of which was launched in 2006.

In the 1960s and 1970s the company's key words scheme was heavily used by British primary schools using a reduced vocabulary to help children learn to read.

In the 1960s, Ladybird produced the Learnabout series of non-fiction (informational) books, some of which were used by adults as well as children.

Today ladybird is as popular as in the past and helping children through the key words and read it yourself to progress in their reading skills. Children find the books enjoyable as they move from one level to the next level as their reading improves.

These are great books to read to children also, as there are lovely bright pictures to go with each story, therefore can be enjoyed by younger preschool children too.  Ladybird have all the classics as well as much more to choose from.

Roald Dahl Books

Roald Dahl Books

Roald Dahl a novelist, short story writer, poet, fighter pilot and screenwriter. He was born in Wales to Norwegian parents, served in the Royal Air Force during World War II.

He rose to fame in the 40`s with his works for children and adults and became one of the world’s best-selling authors. His short stories are known for their unexpected endings and his children’s books for their unsentimental and often very dark humour.

His books are so well written, humorous and very entertaining. Children break free from their cruel oppressors (adults) and go on to have the most amazing adventures. Goodness triumphs; revenge is sweet; evil is punished. It's no wonder that children have continued to enjoy Dahl's tales for decades, as have younger children who have and still do enjoy having Dahl's books read to them.

In all, Dahl wrote 22 children's books, including three books that were published after his death. His most well-known children's books include:

The Monkey with the Bright Blue Bottom

The Monkey with the Bright Blue Bottom

By Steve Smallman, Illustrations by Nick Schon

My 2 year old got this book for Christmas and himself and his four year old brother have been asking for it every evening for the last week, they love it and so do I.

The Monkey with the Bright Blue Bottom is a lovely book with fabulous bright pictures on each page, it’s suitable for 2-5 years, but also great for children a bit older to read themselves.

It’s about a Monkey who sees beautiful colourful birds “Like feathery rainbows they flashed through the air. “How come their so pretty” he thought. “It’s not fair!”

All around him are creatures of all sorts, tall, small, skinny, but none of them purple, yellow or blue.

One day the monkey comes across a paint box with brushes and so this is where the fun begins.

This is a great story which can be read again and again and has lots of rhyming throughout.
